Expense Control

After labor, the major operational cost of a typical commercial vessel is fuel, followed by equipment maintenance.
By closely monitoring fuel consumption, engine and other vital system data by the vessel crew and corporate office, substantial savings can be realized.
The key is to have that data available in front of all the right persons at the right time allowing operational changes to be made quickly to optimize efficiency.
At an inland towing company, a typical tug boat in their fleet consumed about
720,000 gallons of fuel a year. With fuel currently costing $2.15 per gallon
(and sure to be higher in the future), annual fuel cost is over $1.5 Million.
When real-time fuel efficiency data became available, new operating strategies
were developed that enabled the Krill System to be fully paid back in
less than 4 months.
Before the operational changes were made, the company was unnecessarily
losing over $7,000 per month for each vessel. Multiplied by their total fleet of
20 vessels, the continued savings for the entire company and the benefit to
the bottom line was substantial.
